Marine Science Division

Goal:

The goal of the Marine Science Division is to provide science based data and relevant information for informed decisions, the formulation of strategic policies and the effective management of marine ecosystems for increased resilience against climate change and sustainable use of marine resources.

Main activities/services of the division:

(a) long-term coral reef monitoring at selected sites around Mauritius;
(b) mangrove propagation programme in collaboration with NGOs;
(c) mangrove awareness campaign;
(d) carry out Integrated Environment Monitoring Plan icw Wakashio Oil Spill;
(e) seagrass mapping around the island;
(f) blue carbon assessment in seagrass meadows;
(g) monitoring Crown-of Thorns (CoTs) outbreaks in Mauritius;
(h) conducting underwater ecological surveys to provide views in connection with tourism sea-based activities and coastal development works;
(i) assessing requests for marine scientific research, film shooting and firework displays at sea;
(j) projects icw ocean matters and marine mammals/sea turtles and marine ecosystem;
(k) attending to cases of stranded sea turtles/mammals;
(l) treating and rehabilitating of injured sea turtles;
(m) coastal area development and coastal erosion;
(n) implementation of project activities in collaboration with JICA;
(o) awareness talks with students and the public;
(p) stakeholder in the Integrated Coastal Zone Management; and
(q) participating in Commonwealth Blue Charter champion groups.
