Mauritius Maritime Training Academy
1. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
· The
idea of setting up a Sea Training School was born in 1970. Among the various
buildings visited by the consultant, Mr T. Abd-el-Dayern, the building occupied
by the Naval Voluntary forces during the British rule at 7, Guy Rozemont Square
Port Louis was found to be the most suitable.
· The
school was established initially to provide pre-sea training at sea to young
school leavers. Eventually the school provided training to all categories of
ratings in order to constitute a pool of seamen for employment locally and in
foreign shipping companies.
· As the
building reached an advance stage of deterioration, a decision was taken to
construct a modern training institute.
· The
Sea Training School was established in 1970 with the assistance of the Danish
Government by the Ministry of Labour and Industrial Relations, when the late Sir Harold Walter held the portfolio of Minister of Labour and Industrial
Relations. It has been providing courses for seafarers and
prospective seafarers.
· In
2003, government approval was obtained for the construction of a modern and
functional building with sea frontage at Pointe Aux Sables. The project was
completed in 2006. In 2007, Government gave its approval to the renaming of the
school as the Mauritius Maritime Training Academy. This Training Academy was
inaugurated on 19 October 2007.

To be a national and
regional training centre for seafarers, port workers and other personnel
employed in the shipping and shipping related sectors
To provide quality and
value added training adapted to the needs of the Mauritius maritime industry and
the region as per international standards.
4. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS/STANDARDS FOR
COURSES OFFERED AT THE MMTA
1. BASIC SAFETY TRAINING
General
requirements for Basic Safety Training (Personal Safety &
Social Responsibilities, Elementary First Aid, Fire Prevention & Fire
Fighting and Personal Survival Techniques modules) as per STCW Convention 1978,
as amended
Candidates:
(a) must be not
less than 18 years of age
(b) must be
medically fit
(c) should be
able to read, understand and write in English language
2. CROWD
MANAGEMENT
General
requirements for Crowd Management and Safety Training for Personnel providing
Direct Services to Passengers in Passenger Spaces as per STCW Convention 1978,
as amended
Candidates:
(a) must be not
less than 18 years of age
(b) must be
medically fit
(c) shall have
completed approved training for Basic Safety as per requirements of paragraph 2
of Section A-VI
(d) should be
able to read, understand and write in English language
3. CRISIS
MANAGEMENT & HUMAN BEHAVIOUR TRAINING
General
requirements for Crisis Management and Human Behaviour Training as per STCW
Convention 1978, as amended
Candidates:
(a) must be not
less than 18 years of age
(b) must be
medically fit
(c) shall have
completed approved training for Basic Safety as per requirements of Chapter VI,
Regulation VI/1
(d) should be
able to read, understand and write in English language
4.
PROFICIENCY
IN SECURITY AWARENESS
General
requirements for Proficiency in Security Awareness
Candidates:
(a) must be not
less than 18 years of age
(b) must be
medically fit
(c) should be
able to read, understand and write in English language
Note: There is no intake
restriction for Proficiency in Security Awareness programmes

PROFICIENCY
IN DESIGNATED SECURITY DUTIES
General requirements for
Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
Candidates:
(a) must be not
less than 18 years of age
(b) must be
medically fit
(c) should be
able to read, understand and write in English language
Note: Some sea
going experiences would be an advantage before undertaking the Proficiency in
Designated Security Duties programme. A candidate is not required
to have completed the Security Awareness training before being enrolled on the
Proficiency in Designated Security Duties training
6. PROFICIENCY
IN SURVIVAL CRAFT AND RESCUE BOATS OTHER THAN FAST RESCUE BOATS
General
requirements for Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than fast
Rescue Boats
Before
commencing the training, trainees must:
(a) be at less
18 years of age
(b) be able to
read, understand and write in English language
(c) have
received approved training (i.e from a recognized institution) in Personal
survival Techniques with approved sea-going service of not less than 6
months
(d) have
approved sea-going service of not less than 12 months in case requirement t
(iii) above cannot be satisfied
(e) be
medically fit. (All trainees will be asked to fill out a medical questionnaire
before the course commences)
§ Please note
that all sea service claimed shall be approved by the Superintendent of Shipping
prior commencement of the course.
Ø If there is any
request from a Governmental organisation for example, another Ministry or the
National Coast Guard, then part (iii) and (iv) above will not apply BUT the
training will be conducted as per the requirements at Annex C of the
Guidelines.
